LAKHIMPUR: Students organizations like Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU), AJYCP, North Lakhimpur regional unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), NSUI, and others demanded the suspension of the Principal of North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous). In support of the demand, the activists of the organizations initiated protest programmes at the main gate of the college.

Notably, some screenshots of objectionable conversation and photographs through Facebook Messenger between Principal Dr. Biman Chandra Chetia and an identified woman went viral on social media. Following this development, the student bodies initiated protest programme against the Principal demanding action against him. The Lakhimpur district unit of AASU submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding the suspension of the principal for degrading the academic environment of the college. ABVP submitted its memorandum to the president of the College Management and Development Committee with the same demand. The organizations sent the copies of memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Education Minister, Chief Minister and Governor of Assam.

However, the Principal said that he had become a victim of a well-hatched conspiracy against him. He added that an unscrupulous racket had hacked his Facebook account and did so from the fake account to destroy him socially. In this connection, the Principal filed a case at North Lakhimpur Police Station yesterday.

Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, through his Twitter account, declared that the Higher Education Department had already initiated an urgent enquiry into the allegations against the Principal. On the other hand, the College Management and Development Committee has granted 15 days compulsory leave to the Principal by taking immediate action against him regarding the issue.

An urgent meeting of the College Management and Development Committee was organized in the evening on Thursday in this regard under the chairmanship of president Dr. Mukunda Rajbonshi. A memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of the Lakhimpur district and Higher Education Department urging them to trace the main culprit involved in the issue.
