Students protest in Dhemaji district demanding capital punishment of culprit

LAKHIMPUR: Several hundred students from various educational institutions of Dhemaji, led by Dhemaji district unit of All Assam Students' Union staged massive protest on Tuesday demanding exemplary punishment to Rintu Sarmah who attacked two students of Moridhol College along with the father of one of them.

On August 21, Rintu Sarmah attacked Nandita Saikia and Kashmina Dutta, along with Kashmina's father Deba Dutta in Dhemaji town with sharp weapon. Later Rintu Sarmah, the Fourth Grade employee of the same college, was arrested by Dhemaji police and Nandita was shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh for advanced treatment in critical condition. On the other hand, Kashmina and Deba Dutta have been under treatment in Dhemaji Civil Hospital at present. Dhemaji AASU demanded the State Government to shoulder the treatment responsibility of the critically injured two victim students. In this regard, the organization submitted a memorandum to the Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner. The organization sharply criticized the State Government for not suspending the culprit till date.
