Subansiri flood inundates 97 villages in Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: Mega river dam project Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP), being constructed by NHPC at Gerukamukh located in the Assam-Arunachal border area in Dhemaji district, has comprehensively failed to natural disaster before it is commissioned. Though one of the main objectives of setting up the mega project was to control the massive flood and erosion problem caused by Subansiri River, the largest tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra, the main dam of the project is unable to control the overflown water of the catchment area. The overflown water has been rolling down over the main dam of the project for the third day since Thursday.

Notably, due to heavy downpour in the past few days in the State of Arunachal Pradesh, the water level of the Subansiri River started to over flow in the catchment area of the SLHP. As a result of it, water has been rolling over the main dam of the project since Thursday creating havoc in the downstream area of the river. The rapid surge of overflowing water has reportedly collapsed the guard wall which was constructed to protect the main dam of the project. On Saturday too, the overflowing water of Subansiri has been rolling down over the main dam of the project with three meter height till filing this report.

As a result of it, the overflown water of the river has inundated almost 97 revenues villages under five Revenue Circles (RCs) of Lakhimpur district, viz- Kadam, North Lakhimpur, Bihpuriya, Narayanpur and Dhakuakhana. At present, flood caused by the river has submerged 55 revenue villages under North Lakhimpur RC, namely No. 1 Palashpara, No 1 Bamunijan NC, No. 1 Bhugmon, No. 1 Sumdiri Mukh Khoga, No. 2 Palashpara, No. 2 Bamunijan NC, No. 2 Bhugmon, Acherakata Moharichuk, Adisuti NC, Bamayachuk, Bandarkota NC, Baralimora NC, Dafalakata NC, Dambukial NC, Garhmur PGR, Garmur Nagar Gaon, Ghagar PGR, Ghagarmukh NC, Ghuligaon NC, Godaboritup NC, Gohainchapori, Gormur Baligaon, Gowalbari NC, Gramchuk NC, Hindu NC, Acherakatah Balijan, Jengrai NC, Kaliwani NC, Kharkhari Bakal, Hindu NC, Khoga Jugolpur, Korachapori NC Kulamowa NC, Lalitimarang NC, Ligira Mukh, Chanang NC, Mahora Borchapori, Mahora Borchapori NC, Major Chapori NC, Mohaijan No.1, Mohaijan No.2, Mohaijan No.3, Morton Chapori, Na-Ali Miri NC, Na-Dhola NC, Naharani NC No.2

Hindu Gaon, No.3 Hindu Gaon, No.4 Hindu Gaon, Palashpara Tamunarchuk, Patarichuk NC, Patiamora, Puronidhola NC, Rajaburha Santipur NC, Roumari NC, Tamar Gaon, Uhoni NC and Uriyamtola NC, four revenue villages under Kadam RC, namely Bhurbandha NC, No. 1 Gereki, NC Pame and Dorge, 17 revenue villages under Bihpuriya RC, namely,

On the other hand, the flash flood has affected a total of 91,436 people, 23,547 animals (13, 066 big animals, 6752 small animals and 3752 poultry and 4084.2 hectares of crop areas. Moreover, Adam Bagan LP School surface was damaged due to increasing water level of the Kakoi River. Flash flood caused by Subansiri has partially damaged Alnegmari Check bundh at village Mahaijan (approximately 40 meter), No 2 Naharani to Balibheta Protection bundh at No. 2 Naharani (approximately 100 meter). Flood of the same river has kept Alicnga Khabali LP School, Gharmora Gosai Chapori LP School, Alichiga Missing L.P School, Dighalimukh LP School, Santipur 15 Mile LP. School, Karka Doley M.E. School submerging.
