Mega river dam project Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP), being constructed by NHPC at Gerukamukh located in the Assam-Arunachal border area in Dhemaji district
LAKHIMPUR: Mega river dam project Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP), being constructed by NHPC at Gerukamukh located in the Assam-Arunachal border area in Dhemaji district, has comprehensively failed to natural disaster before it is commissioned. Though one of the main objectives of setting up the mega project was to control the massive flood and erosion problem caused by Subansiri River, the largest tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra, the main dam of the project is unable to control the overflown water of the catchment area. The overflown water has been rolling down over the main dam of the project for the third day since Thursday.
Notably, due to heavy downpour in the past few days in the State of Arunachal Pradesh, the water level of the Subansiri River started to over flow in the catchment area of the SLHP. As a result of it, water has been rolling over the main dam of the project since Thursday creating havoc in the downstream area of the river. The rapid surge of overflowing water has reportedly collapsed the guard wall which was constructed to protect the main dam of the project. On Saturday too, the overflowing water of Subansiri has been rolling down over the main dam of the project with three meter height till filing this report.
