LAKHIMPUR: “The activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYP) will stop the construction of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project at any cost. The organization will not retreat from the field of agitation being consecutively staged in order to secure the innocent people living in the Subansiri riverine area under Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Majuli from the possible threat to be caused by the 2,000MW big river dam project. In this regard, the activists of the organization are ready to sacrifice even the last drop of their blood,” said the leaders of the Lakhimpur unit AJYP on Monday while staging a protest against the SLHP in the Ranganadi river basin near Ranganadi bridge along NH-15.

As a part of the continuous agitation programmes against the hydroelectric project set up by NHPC Limited at Gerukamukh along the Assam-Arunachal border in Dhemaji district, the organization administered Jal Sankalpa to stop the construction of the controversial project.

As a part of the programme, the organization paid deep homage to Chaolung Syu-Ka-Pha on the occasion of Asom Divas. The event commenced with the paying of floral tribute to the portrait of Chaolung Syu-Ka-Pha by AJYP central committee adviser Surajit Bhuyan and Lakhimpur MASS secretary Raju Singha. Then the activists of the organization vowed while standing in the water of the Ranganadi River to save the Subansiri, the largest tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra, from the imminent impact of the big river dam project and the native people from possible catastrophe.

After conducting the vow, the activists of the organization, led by Lakhimpur unit president Lulu Baruah and general secretary Sudipta Hazarika, rocked the environment by shouting slogans against SLHP, NHPC and Union and State governments regarding the issue. The dignitaries of several anti-big dam organizations were present in the programme. Notably, the organization will conduct campaign to make the people of the Subansiri riverine area aware about the impact of the big river dam project from next Sunday.
