LAKHIMPUR: At present, the rising prices of essential commodities coupled with wage deflation and increasing joblessness are pushing the poor households to a point of distress. The COVID-19 pandemic has left the majority of the common people with depleted economic resources and no source of income. Now they have to adjust themselves to contend with the spike in prices of essential goods such as edible oil, pulses, other kitchen goods, apart from petrol, diesel and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) etc. The prices of all these things have been skyrocketing day after day making it very difficult for the families to make both ends meet.

Under such circumstances, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) on Tuesday took to the streets with protest programmes across the State against the sky-rocketing prices of petro-products, all essential commodities and bus-fare hike. In Lakhimpur district too, the activists of the political party initiated massive protest programme to demand the governments to control the exorbitant prices of all this things. The SUCI (C) activists, under the banner of the Lakhimpur District Committee, took out a protest rally covering North Lakhimpur town in this connection. During the rally, the protesters rent the air by shouting various slogans to control the rise in the prices of essential commodities, petro-products, to curb the illegal hike in the bus fares. Later, the protesters demonstrated in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office for a long time.

By initiating the protest programme, the political party submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of the district. Through the memorandum, along with a charter of other demands, SUCI (C) demanded the Chief Minister and his government to strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) and to ensure the supply of all essential commodities to the public through the Fair Price Shops in judicious prices . The political party alleged that the governments in the State and at the Centre had been totally unmoved and neutral with regard to controlling the price hike.
