DIGBOI: The state government provided some assistance to the families that were evicted by the railways in the Bogapani locality of Digboi. A total of sixty families received the financial support from the state government.

Each of the sixty landless families belonging to a very poor financial background received a cheque of Rs 25000. Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Digboi constituency, Suren Phukan handed over the cheques to the designated families from an event hosted at his residence in Tingrai.

Speaking on the occasion, the elected representative also mentioned the state government’s decision to allocate land to the landless people of the state. He also informed that the state government has allocated a land area of 40 bighas for this purpose. He added that the state government of Assam has taken all steps towards the betterment of the people of the state including the poor and homeless ones and ensured that he will be helping the public as much as possible.

It is important to know that the railway department evicted a total of 196 families and several shops during the process carried out in the month of February this year. Security personnel had to resort to lathi-charge on protestors resisting an eviction drive on NF Railway land in the Bogapani area under Digboi Police Station in the Tinsukia district. Some police and CRPF personnel on duty and some encroachers sustained injuries in the lathi-charge when the miscreants started pelting stones at them.

The settlers in the Bogapani area, who had been living on NF Railway’s land for several decades, were constantly urged to vacate the railway land. Earlier, several violent incidents took place during eviction drives to free the land from encroachers. According to sources, on February 13, NF Railway served notices to the occupants of the area along NH-38 near Elephant Corridor to let them make alternative arrangements within three days.
