Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Still Remains A Far Cry In Sarupathar town

SARUPATHAR: Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is nearing its fifth anniversary but its impact is yet to be felt in Sarupathar. The roadside of Sarupathar has been conveniently turned into a garbage dumping ground. Some chicken sellers and fish sellers have resorted to discarding bags of raw chicken and fish waste along the roadsides, especially near railway tracks in Sarupathar town, in the absence of a proper waste disposal site. Those involved in the chicken and fish trade collect the raw waste in plastic bags during the day and dispose it by the roadsides and near railway tracks at night. Additionally, stray dogs are attracted by the smell of raw chicken and fish and they tear open the plastic bags and scatter the contents all over.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream project to have public and community toilets and urinals in every nook and corner of the country is still a far cry as any initiative regarding this is yet to reach the town of Sarupathar in Golaghat district. As per official records of the Sarupathar Municipality Board, there are only two public and community toilets which were constructed by the authority in the town area after the scheme was launched by the Central Government.
