Symposium on Assamese Science Literature and Travelogues Concludes at Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: A symposium, jointly organized by Sahitya Akademi and the Assamese Department of the North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) on Monday, concluded successfully. The symposium was organized in three sessions on the topic ‘Post-independence Assamese Science Literature and Travelogues’.

The inaugural session of the event was chaired by the Principal of the college, Dr. Biman Chandra Chetia under the management of Head of the Assamese Department, Lily Cheleng. Co-ordinator of the symposium, Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa read out the welcome speech on behalf of Debendra Kumar Debesh, the secretary of the Sahitya Akademy, Kolkata Regional Office.

The first session of the event on a sub-topic ‘Post-independent Assamese Literature’ commenced with Khiradhar Baruah, noted science litterateur-cum-retired Head of the Chemistry Department of Viswanath College.

“North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) has glorified the intellectual arena of the State by publishing the history of Assamese science literature, organizing a symposium on it and including science literature in an academic course,” he stated from the chair, appreciating Dr. Arabinda Rajkhowa for spearheading the moves initiated.

The second session of the event on the sub-topic ‘Post-independence Assamese Travelogue’ was chaired by eminent literary critic Dr. Jayanta Kumar Borah, who is the professor of the Assamese Department, Dibrugarh University. He highlighted the status of the Assamese travelogues in comparison to the world travelogues.
