SILCHAR: There is ray of hope of overcoming the shadow of COVID-19 in Cachar and Karimganj if the statement of facts of the health departments of both the districts is any indication. This also lends credence to the reassurance by Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that from mid-June, there will be declining trends in positive cases. The Health Minister has left no stone unturned to see that the treatment centres across the state are well staffed and well equipped to meet the unprecedented challenge and contain the fast spreading virus. Despite huge number of patients, the test and treatment have been fault free.
Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Superintendent of SMCH, admitted decline in positive cases from Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi. In COVID ward, 153 positive cases till date have been admitted. In one day, 29 of them released. Presently, only 32 positive patients are undergoing treatment. The cases which came for treatment at SMCH from hotspot zones did not have any symptoms of COVID-19. But, one patient Khalilur Rahman from Anglabazar area of Badarpur circle was admitted in surgical ward of the hospital. He had no travel history, but routine check and test revealed his was a positive case. He was however released after proper care and treatment. In the process, Rahman did infect 14 medical staff including the doctor who had to be quarantined.
Dr Gupta referred to some most critical cases which after treatment were back home. They are Mangla Rani Das, a blood cancer patient of Hailakandi, Zamal Uddin also from Hailakandi, the first COVID-19 in Assam, Archana Nandi and Khalilur Raham of Cachar. The COVID-19 scenario of Barak Valley as a whole has been free from the virus until the entry of Tablighis from Nizamuddin and return of Ajmer Shariff pilgrims. The return of working force from different states also turned the situation alarming. But, the dedicated team of doctors, nurses and the entire medical staff deserve kudos for putting in their best to bring the valley out from a crisis created by the unknown enemy.
