JORHAT: CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) Director Dr. Rakesh Kumar has said that sustainable manufacturing for environmental sustainability is nothing but understanding the correlation between technology, innovation and sustainable development.

He was speaking at the 25th eminent scientist lecture in the lecture series of CSIR-Summer Research Training Programme 2020, on August 7.

Dr. Kumar added, "When we talk about sustainability, in India, in Indian philosophy it is 'Satat Vikaas' which mean that lasts forever and in many other countries it counts for 7 generations. Anything we do should not cause or create any problem in future which is against Sustainable Development.

"We should organize principles for meeting our needs, development goals while simultaneously sustaining the ability of natural system to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services on which economy and society depends. The desired result is a state of society where living conditions and resources are used to continue to meet human needs without undermining the integrity and sustainability of natural system."

Talking on the Sustainable Manufacturing Dr. Kumar emphasised the use of processes that are not polluting, conserve energy and natural resources and are economically sound and safe for employees, communities and consumers. He elaborated the Role and Responsibility of the manufacturing industry in a sustainable system.
