NAHARKATIA: The effigy of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was burnt by Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad Assam (TAYPA) activists at Naharkatia Moran Tiniali on Wednesday to demand Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the six communities of Assam.

The president of TAYPA Naharkatia subdivisional committee, Ananta Phukan said, "It may be recalled that on August 9 in Guwahati, Chief Minister Sonowal had a discussion with Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Assam Central Committee members along with an Ahom ethnic group on the subject of ST status to the six communities. In the meeting, the Chief Minister promised to announce ST status for six communities, including the Tai Ahoms, on August 15."

But the organization is miffed over the fact that the Chief Minister did not keep his promise. The protest on Wednesday was staged against the BJP government and Chief Minsiter Sarbananda Sonowal. "An intensified movement will be launched if ST status is not accorded to the six communities soon," added Phukan.
