TAYPA Stages Sit-in, Demands Halt to Subansiri Dam Work in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: The Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Asom (TAYPA) staged a two-hour-long sit-in in North Lakhimpur town demanding stop on transportation of SLHP (Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project) materials immediately. In the protest program, which was initiated under the aegis of the North Lakhimpur regional unit of the organization in assistance with the district committee, TAYPA regional president Bipul Tamuli Phukan and general secretary Bikash Gogoi came down heavily against the issue. The organization also submitted a memorandum to the Governor, demanding him to take steps to stop the controversial big river dam.

By staging the protest, the organization also demanded to protect five reserve forests of Lakhimpur district - Pabha, Ranga, Dollung, Kadam and Kakoi. In this regard, the organization submitted a separate memorandum to the Chief Minister.

Through the memorandum, the organization further demanded to evict the encroachments in the reserve forests, to survey their lands, to mobilize the activities of the employees of Lakhimpur Divisional Forest Office, to award exemplary punishment to timber smugglers and to seize the illegal saw mills of the district.
