Teachers protest over salary and new service rule announcement

JORHAT, June 27: The All Assam Secondary Additional (Contractual) Teachers’ Association, Jorhat and Majuli district units, staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Inspector of Schools for not receiving their salaries since the couple of months,” said Manab Jyoti Neog, president of the Teacher’ association on Wednesday.

Irate teachers said, “We were appointed in 2010 on contractual basis and we have not been paid salary for several months. We continue to work without job security and the government has adopted a lackadaisical attitude towards our problems. The Government of Assam recently declared during the budget session that contractual teachers’ salary has been hiked to Rs 20,000 from Rs 15,500 but the government has failed to give us salary for the past couple of months till date,” said Lakhi Narayan Bora, secretary of the association.

Moreover, the protesting teachers heavily flayed State Education Minister Siddharth Bhattacharyya’s statement on removal of TET teachers and not making the jobs of contractual teachers permanent. They threatened to launch agitation for fulfilment of their demands.
