LAKHIMPUR: The human-pachyderm conflict has assumed extreme point in Lakhimpur district too along with the other parts of the State. As a part of such conflict, a wild jumbo trampled a teenager girl in Joyhing on Wednesday. The girl was identified as Niha Kurmi (17), an inhabitant of Line 27 of Joyhing Tea Estate.

As per report, the girl was trampled by a wild elephant while she was going to fetch water from a well located a little distance away from her home. Though the incident was informed to the Joyhing Beat Office of the Forest Department, it was alleged that no forest official arrived at the place until two hours.

A tense situation prevailed in the locality after the incident. The local body of the Adivasi Students’ Union condemned the utter failure of the Forest Department with regard to controlling the man-elephant conflict in the district. Later, the body was sent to North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital for post-mortem in the presence of executive magistrate.
