GUWAHATI: The action of rescuing a tortoise by three teenage boys in Assam has earned them respect and recognition from large sections of nature enthusiasts.

Three young boys named Rahul Krow, Hirakjyoti Nath and Jintu Teron were applauded by the public for their actions. They are students of classes ten, nine and eight respectively. They belong to Khalihamari village of the Nagaon district of Assam.

The three boys reportedly sighted a rare yellow-footed tortoise in the fields adjacent to their home. They safely rescued the reptile and later released it into the Kopili river which flows through the region without causing any harm.

Locals mentioned that the river and the adjoining areas are the natural habitats for the animal and appreciated the action of the boys. They also mentioned that the tortoise weighed around 2 kilos.

In a recent incident, the death of multiple vultures were been reported from the state of Assam. A group of localities discovered seven dead vultures near Bogibeel in Dibrugarh along with several more in deteriorated health conditions. The state of Assam has seen the death of vultures from time to time and generally poisoning of carcasses is the reason for the mass deaths of this scavenging avian species. The same has been speculated for this incident as well.

According to reports from the site of the incident, the dead vultures as well as multiple more serious conditions were discovered. The Divisional Forest Officer of Dibrugarh had mentioned that they are suspecting poisoning. He also mentioned that the samples taken from the dead vultures were sent for testing to find the exact reason for the deaths.

He also mentioned that the ill vultures will be treated by veterinary experts and released into the wild once they recover from the suspected poisoning.
