DOOMDOOMA: The public meeting that was convened at Hoonlal HS School premises on Wednesday in strict observance of COVID-19 protocol, opposed the temporary construction of the proposed new Bir Raghav Moran (BRM) Model College on the vacant land of Hoonlal HS School.

The meeting, chaired by president of the School Management and Development Committee, Prasad Sonowal adopted two resolutions whereby it was intimated to the president of the new BRM Model College, who is Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia district, that while there had been consensus in allowing the proposed model college to start functioning at the school premises as per their own time schedule and without any clash with the school's regular routine, the temporary construction on vacant land of the school was not acceptable even if it was verbally assured to the school authority to hand over the same to the school authority once the college was shifted to its permanent site.

The second proposal resolved that in view of New Education Policy, 2020 further construction might be necessitated to accommodate new subjects as per the choice of the students under the curriculum of the new education policy. So the school authority was urged to preserve its available vacant land for future use of the students. Earlier, Principal Olip Khan explained the objectives of the meeting and at his behest, Shima Chaudhury narrated the circumstances under which the said proposal was placed before her by the School Inspector in presence of Director, Higher Education and some other departmental personnel who were on a visit to find out a suitable plot of land for the model college under reference.

The meeting was organized as per discussion with the delegation of the Doomdooma Press Club (DPC) on July 16 which discussed the matter with the school management committee in the backdrop of public concern about the future status of the school. The meeting was addressed by Dhiren Deka, president of Assam Science Writers' Association (ASWA), Jhikananda Borgohain, former Principal and other dignitaries.

All the speakers were unanimous in expressing their concern about such stop gap arrangements that would create a lot of uncertainty in future on one hand and would retard the speedy development of the school in implementing the scheme of things necessitated by the new education policy.

On the other hand, the Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association (ATTSA), Doomdooma Branch, organized a sit-in at Doomdooma Railway Station as per decision of its district committee on Wednesday in support of their demand to name the proposed model college after the first MLA of Doomdooma from the tea tribes community, Malia Tanti.
