Tense Situation in Badarpur Over OC’s Misbehavior

SILCHAR: The situation turned tense in the Badarpur region in the Karinganj district of Assam after a video showing the officer in charge of the Badarpur police station engaged in a verbal battle with a person before forcefully taking the person into the police station.

This incident triggered the local people to come out in large numbers and surround the Badarpur Police Station. They also blocked NH 37 demanding the immediate transfer of the officer in charge of the police station. The situation turned worse when the protesters blocked several key roads in the town. The limited number of police personnel present in the area tried to take control of the situation but soon found themselves in a helpless situation.

Upon the intervention of the Superintendent of Police for Karimganj district, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Gitartha Dev Sharma interacted with the people. He tried to calm the situation down and noted the complaints of the local people. Thereafter he mentioned that proper action will be initiated and requested the people to clear the roads.

Multiple local people had also put in complaints regarding the alleged misbehaviour of the police official towards the members of the general public over the recent time.

Following this development, Badarpur OC Chandan Goswami was reserved closed in relation to the incident as a departmental enquiry has been initiated into the incident. As per the assurance to the public, Dipen Kalita has been appointed as the new officer in charge of the Badarpur police station with effect from Thursday.

In a previous incident, a joint operation with Assam police, the officials of Assam Rifles led to the arrest of three persons and seizure of over 100 gms of Heroin, worth Rs 50 lakh, from Karimganj district. The joint operation was launched by the Radhanagar Battalion of Assam Rifles with police representatives from Patharkandi Police Station on Monday. “Radhanagar Battalion of Agartala Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (E) in a joint operation with Patharkandi PS apprehended three individuals along with grade-1 heroin on 27 March 2023,” officials said.
