Tezpur DC Narsing Pawar lays stress on creating awareness about hazards of tobacco use

Tezpur: The first meeting of the District-level Coordination Committee on the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) was held at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office which was chaired by Deputy Commissioner and president of the District Health Society, Narsing Pawar, in the presence of Additional Director, Health Services and State Coordinator for NTCP, Dr Arundhati Deka, Superintendent of Police, Kumar Sanjit Krishna, ADC (Health) KK Sarma, District Nodal Officer, District Tobacco Control Cell, Sonitpur, Dr Sunanda Tamuly and heads of various departments.

The meeting discussed in details about the roles and responsibilities of various government departments on tobacco control. Speaking at the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner laid stress on creating awareness about the hazards of tobacco use among the general people through banners and hoardings in public places, ban on sale of tobacco products near schools, among others.

Stress was also laid on the need to create awareness in various educational institutions right from LP schools to colleges through audio/ visual means, appointing a nodal teacher for tobacco control and creating awareness at construction sites.

On the other hand, a training-cum-workshop for police personnel of Sonitpur district was also held recently in the Police Reserve auditorium to apprise them on the rules and provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003. Dr Bhaktimoy Bhattacharyya, DNO of Jorhat DTCC was the resource person on the occasion. The workshop was inaugurated by Additional SP, Numal Mahatta.
