TEZPUR: In order to encourage research, capacity building, events, and high-level dialogues for academia and other policy stakeholders like the government, non-governmental bodies and international organizations, Tezpur University (TU) is starting a Centre for Public Policy and Governance (CPPG).

The Centre, with a clear focus on evidence-based research, would like to influence government policies and civil society action for the betterment of the communities in Northeast India and beyond. It will engage with other university departments, governments and other policy influencers through research, dialogues, trainings, workshops, events and conference.

The university recently received approval for nine building projects from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) for implementation with Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) funding under Window-3 for Rs. 153.71 crore. The implementation has been assigned to Assam Public Works Buildings. In addition, the university also has been approved Rs 17 crore by the MHRD for expansion of infrastructure to meet the demand of space for implementation in reservations for Economically Weaker Section (EWS).

"Along with these projects, we would like to build ourselves a hub of research and knowledge generation in public policy and good governance. CPPG mandates to work on the evidence-based research and partner with various agencies to deliver change on the ground that will try to alleviate poverty and strengthen society," said the Registrar, Dr Biren Das.

Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor P K Das will head the centre as Director while Dr. A K Das, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, has been appointed as the coordinator. The advisory body will comprise members from interdisciplinary fields including bureaucracy, academia, civil society, corporate, media, and distinguished intellectuals in policymaking
