Goalpara: The people of Goalpara district on Monday night experienced the third horrific cyclonic storm in the same week. Both the first and second that came on Saturday and Sunday, already had caused extensive damage and interrupted communication and electricity supply.

The high-speed windy storm hit the district about at 12 midnight on Monday and lasted just for fifteen minutes. However, it left behind traces of the worst damage caused in the last 30 years.

The cyclonic storm along with thunderbolt hit the areas under Matia development block like Mornoi, Monakosa, Nepalikhuti, Kodaldhowa, Dakaidal, Dosobhuja Tiniali, Bhatipara, Camp Bazar, Luptachar, Sonapur, Dubapara, Lalabori and Dohikota.

The worst hit was Sainik School at Mornoi where almost all big trees inside the campus were uprooted and the uprooted trees totally blocked the roads. “About 40 electric polls were broken into pieces inside the campus,” said Sanjib Das, deputy general manager of the electricity department.

A huge solar panel worth Rs 30 lakh was completely destroyed. An army team came in the morning and was still trying to clear the roads at the time of filling the report. In Dubapara police outpost barrack, the eleven constables and home guards who were sleeping at that time, had a narrow escape when the entire roof of the barrack collapsed upon them. The three pucca rooms of Mornoi police station were badly damaged due to the impact of the storm. Thousands of families came out onto the streets and took stock of the destruction caused by the storm.

The three consecutive natural disasters have put the government departments in trouble. “In many areas like Forest Gate, Bapujinagar and Salbari, electricity supply has been disrupted since the last three days. Supply of electricity in some areas was restored only on Tuesday. Our men are working day and night,” said Sanjib Das.

The disaster management department informed that in the first two storms, 279 houses, 51 commercial establishments and three educational institutes were hit under Rongjuli revenue circle. About 5,000 houses were affected under Matia revenue circle. About 660 families were provided with temporary plastic. The Bhalukdubi Government Hospital is facing drinking water crisis.
