JAGUN: The nationwide lockdown has made poor people suffer. Amidst this, Coal India Limited's decision for temporary suspension of all mining activities in North Eastern Coalfields in Margherita subdivision from June 3 sparked large-scale protest by several organizations and local residents in front of the NEC General Manager's office in Margherita on Monday.

Protesters held placards demanding the government to withdraw the decision of temporary suspension of mining activities as the local people would suffer due to this decision. Protesters alleged that the decision would affect the livelihood of the local residents. Most of the workers are having a tough time due to the lockdown as they were directly engaged in factories, mining works and labour works. Coal India's decision will directly harm the local workers as most of them are daily wage earners from Ledo, Lekhapani, Jagun and Margherita.

Santosh Chetry, a protester, said, "North Eastern Coalfields (NEC) is a major source of revenue for the Northeast Frontier Railway. This move will not just hamper transportation and industries but directly harm the local peoples, and it will affect the railway revenue and economic growth of Upper Assam too. If this continues, we will also soon see the closure of several factories and industries in Assam. This decision will surely heat up more protests in future."
