SIVASAGAR: Devotees celebrated Mahashivratri with religious fervor in Sivasagar as thousands thronged historic Shiva Dol on Tuesday.
Since morning, devotees formed lines and waited for their turn to offer puja. Anticipating a heavy rush of crowd, the police had deputed adequate personnel to manage the crowd. Earlier, the Mahashivratri Utsav and fair was inaygurated by Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Megha Nidhi Dahal by lighting the lamp on Monday evening.
Shivratri has been celebrated since the time the Shiva Dol was constructed next to the Borpukhuri (Sivasagar Tank) by Queen Ambika Konwari, second wife of Swargadeo Shiva Singha in 1731. Till, 1992, the fair was held inside the temple. Subsequently, the fair area was expanded.
Meanwhile, the Sivasagar district administration has declared a local holiday on March 2 (Wednesday) for Shivratri.
