MANGALDAI: Forest Protection personnel of Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONPTR) in Darrang district arrested three miscreants on Wednesday in connection with the killing of a full-grown Royal Bengal Tiger of the Park.

The three arrested accused, namely Ajibur Rahman, Hasmat Ali and Mohammad ML, all residents of No 2. Bosa Simalu village under Borsola Police Outpost of Dhekiajuli Police Station in Sonitpur district were apprehended from their hideout in Lohoria Char of Morigaon district along the southern border of the Tiger Reserve. They, along with two of their accomplices, had gone underground since the night of June 4 when the forest team had searched for the dead tiger and subsequently dug out its semi-decomposed carcass from the campus of the accused Ajibur's brother, Gajibur in his absence, said a Tiger Reserve source.

It was suspected that the male tiger was killed by mixing poison in its prey. On the following day, veterinary officials conducted the post mortem and the report is yet to be submitted to the Tiger Reserve authorities.

Meanwhile, during interrogation by the forest officials, the arrested accused confessed that they were preparing to sell the bones, skin and other parts of the tiger in the black market at around Rs 10 lakh where absconding mastermind Ahamad Ali would have played the key role, the source further said. All the three accused have been booked under the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act and search operations to nab their underground two accomplices are on.
