TANGLA: In a heart-wrenching incident, a three-year-old jumbo fell into a ditch after it got separated from its herd in the Borengajuli Tea Estate in Udalguri district on Sunday.

According to reports, the jumbo fell into the five-feet deep ditch on Saturday night. It spent the night in the pit and was rescued by the local public and personnel of the Forest department on Sunday morning.

"The pachyderm was rescued from the pit. It even walked for a while. However, it died due to exhaustion," said Dibakar Nayak a nature activist who was part of the rescue operation.

Meanwhile expressing dismay over the incident, noted wildlife activist, Nabajyoti Baruah said,"The Borengajuli tea garden management was requested not to dig deep ditches to prevent accidental deaths as elephant herds move in the area. But such requests were ignored."

Ranger in charge of Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary, Kushal Deka told The Sentinel, "The jumbo was successfully rescued in the morning by locals and forest officials, the mother of the jumbo also chased public following which 12 rounds were fired in the air. However the jumbo after walking nearly 500 metre stumbled and died." He added, "Though the post-mortem report is yet to arrive, it is suspected that the jumbo suffered heart attack."
