Tinsukia Chamber of Commerce (TCC) Takes Steps To Keep Onion Prices Within Affordable Limit

TINSUKIA: Against the backdrop of soaring onion prices, the Tinsukia Chamber of Commerce (TCC) has initiated steps to keep the onion prices within the affordable limit of the consumers.

Refuting the allegation of hoarding, Hira Sharma, the president of TCC, said that both wholesalers and retailers had been asked not to enhance the prise at their whims. But contrary to his claim that the retail price for onion was Rs 48- Rs 50 on Sunday which was at par with other markets in India like Nasik, Indore and Andhra, many retail traders in the Sunday market on GNB Road were reportedly charging Rs 60-Rs 65 per kg.

Sharma further informed that the TCC would have a consultative meeting with the Tinsukia district administration on Monday to chalk out a broad based strategy as Tinsukia market not only controls Tinsukia district alone but also four neighbouring districts of Arunachal Pradesh. Though there may be shortfall in supply for damage incurred due to flood and extensive rain in crop-growing regions, the prices of onion may show some rising trend till arrival of new produce, Sharma opined.
