TINSUKIA: The current state of affairs in Tinsukia College has become a serious concern not for the guardians but also for a section of teachers. While the academic atmosphere has almost disappeared, the college is virtually running without an administrative head. With frequent change of in-charge Principals, the premier institution of upper Assam is plunging into deep crisis.
The crisis began after one Dr Akhilesh Kumar Gupta challenged the appointment of permanent Principal in a writ petition filed before Gauhati High Court on the plea of rejecting his candidature. It was expected that the High Court, based on the merit of the case, would dismiss it soon as Dr Gupta did not fulfil the eligibility criteria. During the interim period, Rana Kumar Changmai acted as i/c Principal for six months that ended on August 31 and was reluctant to continue further for some reasons. The senior most teacher, Dr Bandana Puzari was then appointed as i/c Principal holding two additional charges of DDO and Vice-Principal i/c. Unable to bear the load, she resigned paving the way for Dr Ranjan Kumar Das to assume the charge of i/c Principal on October 9. Thus within a span of six months, three i/c Principals have been appointed. According to college sources, frequent change of DDOs and signatories created severe financial crisis both in terms of government transactions as well as developmental activities.
The administrative protocol mandated the Vice-Principal as the academic head who was supposed to look after engagement of classes, the regularity of teachers’ attendance and examination related works. After Rana Kumar Changmai assumed charge, the Higher Secondary classes had been shifted to the morning hours with classes beginning at 6.30 am. It is alleged that a good of number of teachers abstain from taking classes in the morning, leaving a large number of students gossiping inside the empty classrooms. In the absence of any authority in the morning, the students are having a field day, alleged a morning stroller.
The management, knowing well the state-of-affairs, allegedly remained mute. Taking advantage of the situation, some teachers in day classes (degree) too reportedly started behaving in a similar manner. A college insider said the college becomes desolate after noon.
The college GB president, Dilip Kumar Kalita, while expressing concern over frequent change of i/c Principals, desired that the DHE, Assam should immediately clear the pending appointment of permanent Principal to save the college from the imbroglio, besides urging upon the DHE to visit the college at the earliest.
