Guwahati: Bhuban Likson posted in Tinsukia district has become the latest COVID-19 casualty among the ranks of the Assam police after he passed away from the respiratory.

"We lost ABC/365 Bhuban Likson to Covid. Posted at Tinsukia district Tested COVID+ on 02.08.2020. Expired on 04.08.2020 at AMCH, Dibrugarh. Heartfelt condolences", Assam ADGP (Law and Order) GP Singh wrote in a tweet.

With Likson's death, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the Assam police has risen to 5.

Tinsukia's Superintendent of Police Shiladitya Chetia informed The Sentinel Digital that Likson, who was posted in Tinsukia, was around 47 years of age; he was from Tengakhat under Dibrugarh and hailed from the Amguri village.

"After testing positive for the dreaded coronavirus, the Assam cop was initially taken to the Dikom COVID Care Centre for his treatment. However, his condition soon grew critical due to which he had to be shifted to the AMCH where he passed away. He is survived by his wife, a son and daughter and a host of relatives", Chetia further informed.

Chetia also informed us that the entire Tinsukia district police force is mourning the demise of the COVID-19 warrior whose last rites will be performed today as per COVID-19 protocol.

The cop's death has been reported at a time when the number of COVID-19 cases in Assam is continuing to surge at a steady and alarming rate.

Assam on Tuesday reported its highest single-day spike of 2,886 new COVID-19 cases, taking the state''s tally to 48,161, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated. 6 more patients died in the state within 24 hours, following which the toll rose to 115, he said.

Two deaths each were reported from Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, while two others from Jorhat and Sonitpur, Sarma said. Most of the new cases were reported from the worst-hit Kamrup (Metro) district where 550 people tested positive, followed by 294 from Kamrup Rural, 213 from Nagaon, and 201 from Dibrugarh.
