

MORIGAON: Activists of Tiwa Yuba Chatra Parishad (TYCP), All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU) and All Tiwa Protection Committee (ATPC) have threatened to launch a series of agitation as the government has turned a deaf ear to the democratic rights of the Tiwa people. In a statement, the leaders of the organizations Krishna Konwar, president, TYCP, Cheniram Malang, president, ATSU and Kartik Deuri, president, ATPC have reacted sharply to the State government’s failure to forward the sub-committee's recommendation for autonomous status under the sixth schedule of the Indian Constitution. The leaders of the organizations also said though the state government had constituted the sub-committee in view of providing autonomous status under sixth schedule to the tribes communities like Tiwa , Rabha and Mising, yet the State government has not put the proposal of the sub-committee to the Central government till date.
The organizations has now decided to launch a series of democratic agitation in the district. In protest against the nonfulfillment of the demands of the organizations, a torchlight rally will be taken out across the town on June 8, a protest rally will be held on June 19, National Highway blockade on July 10, train track blockade programme on July 20 and a 12-hour Assam bandh. Besides the organizations have also criticized the government for not resolving the problems of the indigenous tribes people of middle Assam despite the establishment of an autonomous council in 1995.
