Tribute to Nur Chasma Ahmed

With profound grief and a heavy heart I remember my Aaijaan (maternal grandmother), Nur Chasma Ahmed on her challisa today, who passed away on June 4, 2021 at the age of 96 at Lakhtokia, Guwahati.

A lady of great charm and character who carried an aura of style and sophistication, she enjoyed abundant love and respect from all her acquaintances due to her pious, loving, caring and affable nature. She was a self-reliant and a rock solid lady of her times with modern progressive thoughts. She was fun-loving, adventurous and an avid traveller who loved exploring new places. Gardening was her hobby and cooking a passion, her gourmet delicacies were fondly relished by all.

Born at Machchowa, she completed her formal education from the iconic Panbazar Girls' School before moving to Shillong with her husband Samsuddin Ahmed of Lakhtokia who was then the Superintendent of Government Press during the British times in 1944. Being ambitious and aspirational, she joined the Shillong Postal Department to pursue her dream of being an independent working lady. She diligently managed to maintain a cordial work life balance in supporting the family and raising her children (5 daughters and a son) to become responsible citizens. She was the affectionate grandmother of 13 grandchildren and great grandmother of 11 great grandchildren.

I personally have very fond memories with her right from my toddler days to fatherhood; her love and blessings have always been a constant source of light and inspiration. I will always cherish and be ever indebted for her contribution in my upbringing.

She was actively associated with many socio-cultural activities and social organizations; she was the founding member of Anjumanae Khwatinamul Islam and an active member of Eastern India Women's Association. Due to her rich contribution to society, she received appreciation and accolades from Six Mile Chasal Mahila Sangha and Annapurna Mahila Sangha. I pray to the Almighty to rest her in eternal peace.
