MANGALDAI: A solemn memorial meeting was held on Saturday at No. 2 Bamunpara, Mangaldai, in honour of the late Nagendra Nath Sharma, retired Head Master of Hirapara Middle School and recipient of the prestigious State Level Teacher Award. The event, attended by over a hundred well-wishers, relatives, and prominent citizens, reflected the deep respect and admiration held for Sharma, who was not only an educator but a dedicated social reformer.
In his tribute, Panchanan Sharma, president of the Mangaldai Sanatana Dharma Sabha, described Sharma as a man who went beyond his duties as a teacher, guiding not just his own children—Pranjal, Himashri, Namita, and Bhanita—but also mentoring neighbourhood youth to lead disciplined lives. “He was beloved by all for his unwavering values and concern for the community,” said Sharma.
Veteran journalist and president of the Mangaldai Media Circle, Bhargab Kumar Das, shared heartfelt memories of his association with the late Sharma during the Assam Movement, emphasizing the warmth and camaraderie he experienced in the Sharma household. He also lauded Pranjal Sharma, Sharma’s only son, as a distinguished announcer and influential cultural figure in Darrang district.
The ceremony began with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp by Sunil Kumar Goswami, retired Deputy Director of the State Museum. Floral tributes were offered by Guwahati-based social worker Arpana Khaund, while Asim Sharma, President of the No. 2 Bamunpara Village Development Committee, presented a formal condolence citation to the bereaved family.
Among the speakers, Hareswar Sarma, the youngest brother of the departed, recalled Nagendra Nath’s early sacrifices, taking over family responsibilities at just 16 after the sudden demise of their parents.
