MANGALDAI: Two persons who had returned from Maharashtra and Kolkata to Assam and had reportedly fled from a quarantine centre in Guwahati, have tested COVID-19 positive and this has created sensation in Darrang district. Amirul Islam of village No.1 Arimari village under Shyampur Police Station in Dalgaon area reached Guwahati on May 22 along with five other persons. His swab sample was collected and he was kept in the quarantine centre at Disang Resort at Sonapur near Guwahati. But he, along with the other five persons, fled from the quarantine centre and reached home before the Eid-ul-Fitre celebration.

On the basis of the information received from the authority concerned, a team of police and medical staff picked him up and admitted in the isolation ward at Mangaldai Civil Hospital. The five other persons and his parents have been sent to the quarantine centre in Darrang. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah and Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan immediately rushed to village No. 1 Arimari and declared it as the first containment zone of the district.

On the other hand, Mangaldai Police on Wednesday night intercepted a Swift Dzire car bearing registration number AS 01 HC 8727 at about 10 pm and recovered Nizamuddin Ahmed of village Nadi Kash near Besimari under Dalgaon Police Station who had also reportedly fled from a quarantine centre in Guwahati.

Apprehended Nizamuddin has also tested COVID-19 positive. Police and medical team admitted Nizamuddin at the isolstion centre at Mangaldai Civil Hospital. Both the associates of Nizamuddin, namely Khursid Alam and Amin Ali, and the driver of the vehicle, Baranya Kalita have been sent to quarantine centre. Nizamuddin arrived in Guwahati from Maharashtra on May 22.

Meanwhile, the conscious section of people of Mangaldai have expressed deep concern over the reported escape of both the COVID-19 positive patients from the quarantine centre and urged the district administration to take up stern legal action against both erring persons.
