DIGBOI: Jagun police, during an intensified naka check along the Assam-Arunachal border in Jagun close to the border gate, held two drug peddlers on Tuesday evening.

Earlier on Monday, a potential peddler was held and prosecuted by nearby Bordumsa Police in Tinsukia district. According to police sources, one Nuttun Joy Chakma of Miao Bhudhistta village and Athisa Yobin of Vijanagar's Gandhigram village of Arunachal's Changlang district were arrested by the team of Assam Police at Namphai Gaon Tinali under Jagun Police outpost in Tinsukia district.

"We recovered 3.6 grams of suspected heroin and few plastic containers from the possession of the duo," said one of the personnel on duty. According to the arrested peddlers, they were heading back from the Ledo area to Miao when the arrest was made.

Jagun being Assam's immediate market for the nearby people of Jairampur, Nampong, and Miao and Kharsang area in Arunachal Pradesh, the cross border movements of anti-social elements and marketing of contraband substance are on a rise. Being close to Myanmar located within a distance of around 70 kilometers from Jagun, the convergence point has turned very vulnerable for carrying international trade on drugs with a huge network of peddlers and wholesale dealers.

"We are operating extensively against the drug trade as part of Assam Police's war on drugs and have achieved significant milestones during the campaign over a period of time. Several kingpins were nailed down and potential wholesale dealers and peddlers have been put behind bars," said one of the officials of the district police closely monitoring the anti-drug squad across the district of Tinsukia. Jagun police has been effectively working to curb the menace of drug trade and consumption.

Notably, one Chandra Gurung of Namrup was also held by Jagun Police a couple of days back and prosecuted u/s 26/2022 21(a), 27(A), and 29of NDPS Act.

However, based on the case registered under case no 31/ 2022, both the accused Chakma and Yobin were prosecuted u/s 21 (a) and 27 of the NDPS Act.
