GUWAHATI: The Assam transport minister spoke to the media on Tuesday regarding the two new Greenfield airports that would be built in Karbi Anglong and Dalu.

The minister, following a significant session of transport ministers in New Delhi, provided an analysis on a number of significant decisions made during the high-level meeting.

Suklabaidya, the transport minister of Assam, also claimed that discussions had taken place regarding the development of two water airports in Guwahati and Umrangso.

According to the Assam cabinet minister, work on two Greenfield Airports in Assam's districts Karbi Anglong and Dalu will shortly get underway. He also mentioned that the state is already developing the airports in Dibrugarh, Nalbari and Jorhat. According to the minister, work is also being done on the Rupsi airport and the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) airport at Borjhar, Guwahati.

In a recent press release this year it was claimed by ABYSA that the government is attempting to seize land in the Dolu tea estate in Assam for the construction of a grrenfield airport without considering the future of the garden's workers. If the proposal goes on, a sizable number of tea plants would be lost, and this is unacceptable, according to the group.

The All Barak Youth Students' Association (ABYSA) has urged that the proposed airport be built on the grounds of the Cachar Paper Mill, the only industry in the Barak Valley and currently inactive since October 2015, in Panchgram, Hailakandi district. The distance from Silchar town is roughly 24 kilometres.

The government should take into account their thoughts and ideas before making a decision, it was stated, as a significant portion of the tea garden's employees and a number of organisations are opposed to the airport's development there. The group further emphasised that the proposed airport should be constructed in Panchgram, which is equally distant from the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi in the Barak Valley.
