HAILAKANDI: Following an act of vandalism by some miscreants in a temple, the Hailakandi district police arrested two youths involved in the incident.

The incident took place at Shiv temple at Singhola Basti under Lakhinagar Police Post under Lala Police station on Friday.

On receipt of the information, in-charge of Lakhinagar Police Post followed by the in-charge, Lala Police Station and Additional SP (Hq.) rushed to the place of incident. Later, the Circle Officer, Lala also arrived at the spot.

Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath revealed that during preliminary investigation it was found that the Shiv temple did not have any boundary wall or fencing and anyone can easily enter without any obstacle. "One trishul was seen bent and some pieces of broken earthen lamps were seen lying scattered nearby. Fresh cow dung was also noticed within the premises," said Nath.

Incensed over the issue, some agitated locals resorted to road blockade near the temple. As the police officers were trying to pacify the mob, at that moment an Alto car came from the opposite direction and then the mob attempted to attack the vehicle. Immediately the police and other security personnel swung into action and chased and dispersed the violent mob to defuse the situation.

Meanwhile, based on inputs, a suspect named Pappu Rabidas, 19, son of Tiala Rabidas, a resident of Singhola Basti, was apprehended. During interrogation, Rabidas confessed that he along with two other boys of the same community went to the Shiv temple on Friday night and vandalized some items in an inebriated state.

Based on the information, the police arrested Jagadish Hazam, 27, son of Sokkholdeep Hazam of Singhola Basti on the same night. A case no.237/2020 under sections 457/295/295A/34 IPC has been registered at Lala Police Station. Investigation is on.
