LAKHIMPUR: Two more persons succumbed to COVID-19 in Lakhimpur district. One of them has been identified as Kiran Chetri (45), resident of Bokanala under Boginadi Block Primary Health Centre area of the district. He breathed his last on Friday while he was shifted to COVID ward of Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital (LMCH) from home isolation. Notably, the person was admitted in the COVID ward of LMCH on May 9. But he shifted himself to home isolation on May 11. At home, his health condition deteriorated due to which he had to be shifted to LMCH on Friday.

The other deceased person has been identified as Kulaprabha Hazarika (80), resident of Bhogdaiguri village under Bihpuriya BPHC. She died on Friday evening and she tested positive for COVID-19 after death. Notably, the rest of the four members of the family also tested positive for COVID-19 earlier. They have been at home isolation at present. With these two fatalities, the number of COVID-19 deaths has spiked to 16 in the district during the second wave of the pandemic since April 1.

On the other hand, a total of 161 fresh COVID-19 cases were detected in Lakhimpur district in last two days as per Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted across the district. Out of them, 68 patients were detected on Friday, 93 patients were detected on Saturday while patients were detected on Sunday.

On Friday, the District Health Department conducted the RAT upon 926 people across the district. The detected cases were reported from North Lakhimpur Urban Hospital (4), Dhalpur BPHC (14), Bihpuriya BPHC (10), Naoboicha BPHC (5), Boginadi BPHC (6), Dhakuakhana BPHC (9) and Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital Respiratory Clinic (18). Two persons were found positive as per Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RTPCR) Test. All these patients have been put to home quarantine.

On the other hand, the District Health Department conducted the RAT upon 1,071 people on Saturday across the district. On this day, the detected cases were reported from North Lakhimpur Urban Hospital (2), Dhalpur BPHC (11), Bihpuriya BPHC (7), Naoboicha BPHC (32), Boginadi BPHC (16), Ghilamora BPHC (2), Dhakuakhana BPHC (1) and Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital Respiratory Clinic (22). Seven of these patients have been put to institutional isolation while 86 have been put to home quarantine. On Sunday, the detected patients were reported from North Lakhimpur Urban Hospital (1), Bihpuriya BPHC (4), Naoboicha BPHC (1), Boginadi BPHC (2) and Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital Respiratory Clinic (14). On this day, the District Health Department conducted only 408 RATs across the district.

With these fresh patients, the cumulative total of COVID-19 cases of the district has surged to 9,839 since April 4 of the last year. Out of them, 8,973 recovered patients have been discharged from hospitals and home quarantine while there are 790 active cases in the district at present. On Sunday, 10 recovered patients were discharged from institutional isolation while 104 recovered patients were discharged from home isolation. A total of 1,789 people of the district tested positive for COVID-19 in the district during the second wave of the contagion since April 1 of the current year.

On the other hand, in view of the detection of 22 COVID-19 cases at Silonibari Tea Estate under Naoboicha Revenue Circle on Saturday, Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur-cum-District Magistrate, Khageswar Pegu has declared the tea estate as micro containment zone in order to arrest the spread of the pandemic and to break the chain of the contagion in the interest of the public health. By declaring the tea estate as containment zone under Section 3(b), (c), (h) and (m) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the Deputy Commissioner has restricted the exit and entry of the people in and out of the containment zone. During the containment period, the tea estate authority will have to designate staff for providing food and other essential services to the people. The designated staff will have to be allowed to enter inside the containment zone only after wearing of full PPE. The tea estate authority must provide separate accommodation to the staff near the containment zone if required.
