BAKSA: Amidst the joy of Rongali Bihu, two wild mithuns created terror in Sahpur village of Nagrijuli in the district of Baksa on Friday.

The villagers said that the two mithuns strayed into the village in the morning. People gathered to see them. The two mithuns became aggressive and attacked people. A police team led by Nagrijuli police station in-charge Manoj Das reached Sahpur immediately after getting information. On the other hand, a forest team led by Ranger Pranab Das from Kumarikata forest range office as well as a team of forest officials of Tamulpur forest range office reached the village. Manas Shashi Khunggur Eco Tourism Society, a volunteer organization, also reached the village. Meanwhile, a total of eight persons, including Sufia Khatun, Basanti Das, Nurul Hussain, Tabibar Rahman, Salam Ali, Sameen Bayan of Dongargaon, Mukund Kalita of No 1 Kalcheni and Hiren Boro of the forest department were injured in the attack by the mithuns.

All the injured were first treated at the Nagrijuli Model Hospital. The critically injured Nurul Hussain, Sameen Bayan and Mukunda Kalita were sent to Guwahati for better treatment as their injuries were severe. Locals were outraged after eight people were injured in the attack by the mithuns and they vandalized a forest department car.

The mithuns had not been caught till the filing of the report. Pranab Das, Range officer of Kumarikata Range office, told media persons, "The two mithuns are thought to have come from the hills of Bhutan border through the Balti River and entered the village. They will have to be tranquilized. We have already contacted the expert team of Manas Wildlife Sanctuary for the same. If the two mithuns do not return to the hills at night then arrangements will be made to tranquilize them tomorrow."
