Tyagbir Hem Baruah College conducts international webinar on gender equality

JAMUGURIHAT: The Department of Nepali of Tyagbir Hem Baruah (THB) College, Jamugurihat; one of the leading institutions of the north bank of Assam organized an international webinar on 'Gender Equality and Women's writing in Nepali Literature' on Sunday in collaboration with Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of T.H.B.College. Dr. Ajit Hazarika; principal of the college inaugurated the webinar while Dr. Tilak Sarma Head of the department of Nepali and one of the conveners forwarded welcome note. Dr. Govinda Raj Bhattarai, former Head of the department of English of Tribhuwan University, Kathmandu, Nepal; a renowned scholar and a prolific writer addressed the webinar as a key-note speaker. During his speech, he termed the concerned topic as a new concept in the arena of world literature and called it as one the branches of post modern literature which highlights socio-cultural issues and problems of women that they normally face in their day to day life in male dominated society. Attending the webinar as a resource person, Dr Pushpa Sharma, Assistant Professor and Head of the department of Nepali, Sikkim University highlighted the topic in a sequential order. Dr. Sharma first introduced the topic of gender equality, its concept, study of gender equality, womenism etc for common viewers. Dr. Sharma then correlated the topic concerned with the writing in Nepali literature. Resource person Assistant Professor Sharma had cited the examples of Indian Nepali women writers including Pushpa Rai, Bindya Subba, Geeta Upadhyaya, Parijat, Dr. Shanti Thapa, Geeta Limbu, Indramoni Darnal, Dr. Indu Prabha Devi, Shudha M Rai, Kamala Ashu, Shanti Chetry, Basundhara Sarma, Dr. Daibaki Devi etc and elements of womenism in their write-ups. During the course of discussion resource person Dr. Sharma focused on Nepali poems, novels, short stories to correlate the topic. The discussion covered literary works of writers from regions like Sikkim, Darjileeng, Vagshu, Uttarakhand and NE region. After it, emerging writer Anjan Baskota, Assistant Professor Dr. Uma Devi and research scholar Mohan Pathak had asked questions relating to the topic. Repertoires of the webinar Dr. Indu Prabha Devi, Head of the department of Assamese of B. Barooah College, Guwahati and Dr. Sanjib Upadhayaya, Head of the department of Zoology of THB College spoke on the occasion. Invited guest scholars Dr. Kumar Koirala, Mitra Dev Sarma, former Director of Statistics of Aurunachal Pradesh, Hem Goutam, Head of the department of Nepali, Biswanath College also addressed the webinar. Dr. Jitu Tamuli, Head of the department of Economics of THB College and one of the conveners of the webinar had carried out the proceedings while Akash Dahal, assistant professor of THB College offered vote of thanks.
