LAKHIMPUR: The UBPO (United Bodo People's Organization) centrally celebrated its eighth Foundation Day in Dhemaji district adhering to COVID-19 protocol on Sunday.

The organization observed the event across 22 districts of the State outside the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD). The central programme of the event was organized at Nirupoma Hagjer Bodo ME School, located at No. 1 Tethuri under the auspices of Dhemaji district unit of UBPO in association with Dhemaji regional unit.

The agenda of the programme kick-started with the unfurling of the organizational flag by UBPO State president Manoranjan Basumatari while Dhemaji district unit president Ratiram Basumatari unfurled the flag on behalf of the district committee.

On the other hand, the presidents of Dhemaji, Gogamukh, Silapothar, Sanja Sanjari Nougar, Swanab Sanjari Nougar, Madhya Jonai and Jonai regional committees under Dhemaji district body of the organization also unfurled the organizational flag on behalf of their respective units. The ''Smriti Tarpan'' event was inaugurated by UBPO adviser Ratan Basumatari.

It was followed by a public meeting with Dhemaji district unit UBPO president Ratiram Basumatari in the chair under the management of general secretary Dipankar Narzari. In the meeting, UBPO president Manoranjan Basumatari stated that the UBPO had been raising demands strongly since it was constituted in order to secure the political, academic, socio-economic, land-related rights of the Bodo community living outside the BTAD and to ensure their comprehensive progress and development.

As an outcome of the revolutionary activities of the UBPO, the Bodo Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council (BKWAC) has been constituted by the government as per the recommendation of the 3rd Bodo Peace Accord for the welfare of the Bodo-community people living outside the BTAD,'' stated Manoranjan Basumatari. He called upon the State Government to release a special financial package of Rs. 300 crores for the infrastructure development of the recently constituted BKWAC, to grant permanent Land Pattas (settlement) to the indigenous Bodo Kachari Tribe (ST) families under the provision of Scheduled Tribe and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 with immediate effect, to include the Boro Kachari people living within Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao Autonomous Districts of Assam in the List of ST (Hills) as per the clause No. 6 of the Bodo Peace Accord, 2020, to grant Bodo Cultural Research Centre under the administrative jurisdiction of the BKWAC for promoting cultural and social ethics and its uplift and to fulfil the long-pending demands raised by the organization.

Taking part as the chief guest in the programme, UBPO founder president-cum-Chief Executive Member of the BKWAC, Mihiniswar Basumatari said that each and everyone must be industrious and united in order to make a community strong. He added that the new generation could go forward only when a situation of work culture and a healthy academic environment would generate in the Bodo community. He asserted that the BKWAC would march forward by adopting flagship and public friendly schemes for the all-around development of the Bodo community people living outside the BTAD by reflecting their hopes and aspirations. UBPO adviser Ratan Basumatari also spoke in the meeting on the occasion.

UBPO vice-chairperson Soumoshree Bodo, organizing secretary Pranjita Bodo, cultural secretary Nirmal Brahma, Ila Brahma, Dhemaji district unit ABWWF president Phuleswari Doinari, adviser Shobharani Basumatari, MAC executive member M Molendra Narzari, Surrendered NDFB Welfare Association president Dharmeswar Basumatari were among those who are present in the programme.
