LAKHIMPUR: The United Bodo People’s Organization (UBPO) has demanded the Government of Assam to allocate large amount of funds for Bodo-Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council (BKWAC) in order to render development for more than 10 lakh Bodo people living in 17 districts of the State. One of the prominent signatory organizations of the 3rd Bodo Peace Accord or BTR Accord, UBPO raised this demand through a press release sent to media on Sunday.

In the press release, UBPO president Manuranjan Basumatary and general secretary Pitambar Brahma said, “The Government of Assam set up the Bodo-Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council as per Para 5:1 of the BTR Accord for focused development of Bodo people living outside BTAD. The BKWAC covers over 10 lakh Bodo people living in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Nagaon, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup (Rural), Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Karimganj, Hailakandi districts, in addition to the Bru community people. But the Government of Assam allotted only a sum of Rs. 13.50 crore to the BKWAC in 2020-21 financial year. Similarly, only the same amount of fund was allotted to the autonomous council in 2021-22 financial year too. With this lump-sum amount of fund allotted by the Government of Assam to this largest autonomous council of the State covering a big figure of population, no development can be done in the Bodo-inhabited areas.”

Under such circumstances, the UBPO has demanded the State Government to allocate a large amount of fund for BKWAC during the ongoing Budget session of the State for the development of the Bodo people living across the State – extending from Sadia to Dhubri, including the Barak Valley.
