LAKHIMPUR: UBPO (United Bodo People's Organization) expressed serious reaction over the eviction drive conducted at Silsako in Kamrup (Metro) district. The district administration on May 13 came down heavily on alleged illegal settlers at Silsako Beel (wetland) near the Chanchal area of VIP road by carrying out an eviction drive. According to the district administration, Silsako Beel has been a favourite place for illegal settlers as it has been under their clutches for years following which the district administration carried out an eviction drive on 100 metres of illegally occupied government lands.

Regarding the issue, UBPO Central Committee president Manoranjan Basumatari said, "The eviction conducted by the State Government at Silsako is unjust to the sons of the soil. The indigenous people living at Silsako have been evicted with inhumane attitudes during the rainy days. This injustice caused by the government has violated human right."

The UBPO president further said that the State Government had initiated steps to accord land right to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) people of the State under the provisions of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006.

"The Chief Minister once stated that the Assam was the land of the tribal people, who are the son of soil. Even after such statement made by the Chief Minister, why did the Kamrup district administration evict the tribal people at Silsako with inhumane attitude?" Manoranjan Basumatari said.

On the other hand, UBPO and BKWAC (Bodo Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council) distributed relief items among the evicted people of Silsako on Saturday. BKWAC executive members Anil Basumatari, Rajesh Chourky, UBPO president Manoranjan Basumatari and many other dignitaries of the organization on Saturday visited the 126 families whose houses had been collapsed during the eviction drive.
