Guwahati: United Liberation Front of Axom bomb expert Amrit Pallab Goswami has tested COVID-19 positive after tests were conducted on prison inmates of the Guwahati Central Jail on Wednesday, July 8.

"Rapid antigen tests were being conducted at the jail yesterday, and the jailed ULFA (I) cadre credited for carrying out the bombings at the Zoo Road area in Guwahati last year, has tested positive. Along with him, two others -- the imprisoned Krishak Mukti leaders Dhaijya Konwar and Bitu Sonowal -- have also tested positive for the contagion. There are the only 3 confirmed positive cases that were detected in the jail yesterday", a jail official told The Sentinel Digital, adding that he was shifted out of the jail to the MMCH hospital in Guwahati's Panbazar area for treatment.

In May of 2019, Police nabbed Goswami, a pro-talks leader, from his residence in Lakhibari under Jamuguri police station of Golaghat district in connection with Guwahati Zoo road grenade blast. According to the report, the former ULFA-I rebel Amrit Ballabh Goswami had a telephonic link with the television actress Jahnabi Saikia, another blast accused. Goswami was among the 8 persons who were named in the charge sheet filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in November of 2019 in regards to the grenade lobbing case, before a special court in Guwahati.

The NIA claimed that Amrit Ballav Goswami was involved in the conspiracy of the independent faction of ULFA to create an independent country of Assam, and was directly associated with ULFA-I providing support to them for committing terrorist acts and other unlawful activities.
