Unabated illegal extraction of sand at Gethupather from Burhidihing River

NAHARKATIA: The unabated illegal extraction and smuggling of sand is going on in full swing in the Gethupathar area of Naharkatia from Burhiding River by some sand mafia which is under the jurisdiction of Dibrugarh forest division, Joypur range Naharkatia forest beat office. Some ruling party workers are allegedly involved in it.

The sand mafia has been supplying the said sand to under-constructed Nagaon Stadium as well as in the earth filling work behind the Hajua Pather weekly market. Sand is being openly extracted and supplied illegally, while the Naharkatia Forest Beat Office officials under the Jaipur Forest Range keep quiet. Naharkatia forest beat office is located adjacent to the Nagaon Stadium which is under construction.

According to a higher official in the forest department, there is no work permit for the sand extraction and supplying for the aforesaid project. As per the rules, if sand or sediment is required for any government work, the department issues work permits according to the amount of sand and sediment required for the work and the work permit with GPS points also mentions where the sand will be mined. However, no permit has been issued for the supply of sand and sediment for this entire work. Some sand mafia are mining illegally and smuggling sand and sediment without paying any royalty to the government.
