Unable to Sit for HSLC Exam Girl Commits Suicide in Assam's Lakhimpur

GUWAHATI: In an unfortunate incident, unable to appear in the Assam's high school leaving certificate (HSLC) exam after the government decided to cancel it due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, reportedly led a girl student to commit suicide.

According to reports, a girl has reportedly committed suicide in Lakhimpur's Korchan Majarkuri just after board exams were cancelled.

As per locals, the student, identified as one Rani Gogoi, was a studious student and was expecting to sit in the exam and pass with flying colors.

Family members says, the girl student was unhappy with the state government's decision of cancellation the Class 10 and Class 12 examinations in view of current COVID-19 situation.

"She wished to show a good result in the Class 10 final examination. She committed suicide on Saturday evening at around 6 pm. Her father died few years back," the victim's mother said.

Meanwhile, the State Education Department constituted two high-level committees for preparing the evaluation modalities – one each for HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) and HS (Higher Secondary) – candidates. Each of the two committees has nine members in order to evaluate the students for higher education.

While the committee for HSLC is headed by former Vice-Chancellor of Dibrugarh University Dr Alok Buragohain, the one for HS is headed by Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dipak Kumar Sarma.

Each of the two committees will prepare the modalities to be adopted by the SEBA (Board of Secondary Education, Assam) and the AHSEC (Assam Higher Secondary Education Council) to evaluate each student for the marks assigned against the theory portion of each subject.

The procedure must be based on available records in schools against each student. According to the chairpersons of SEBA and AHSEC, internal assignment marks of some selected subjects and practical examinations have already been completed, and the marks secured by each of the candidates are already uploaded in their respective systems. The duo, however, said that they don't have any system of recording marks secured by the students in internal examinations conducted by the schools like unit tests, half-yearly and test examinations.

After the proper examination on receipt of the reports, the Education Department will issue necessary instructions to all offices and schools concerned to do the needful.
