NAZIRA: A junction drain wall in Nazira town of Sivasagar district, which was constructed with concrete posts at a distance of about 10 meters instead of 10 feet, collapsed on June 22 after 10-12 days of hurried construction in an alleged attempt to loot the allocated funds. The locals are still awaiting measures to prevent the collapse of the entire wall.

Nazira town has been flooded by artificial floods due to unplanned works of the municipality. The residents of wards 5, 8, and 9 of Nazira town have been suffering from artificial flooding for a long time even as demands for the construction of proper sewerage systems remained unmet. The municipality has awarded the contract for the construction of the junction drain to a BJP worker. On the other hand, the land where the construction works of the junction drain is ongoing belongs to the ‘Syed family’ of Nazira town and it has become a victim of water pollution. The family had filed a petition in the Nazira municipality several years ago seeking compensation for the pollution of their agricultural land by the municipality’s contaminated water.

Even after the construction of the junction drain at a cost of lakhs of rupees, there is no specific plan for where the polluted water would go.
