Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently shared a video on his X social media handle, highlighting the successes of ‘Operation Falcon’ that was launched in 2024, an anti-poaching drive that sheds light on Assam’s contributions to saving endangered wildlife. The video noted that arrests have been made in these districts including Udalguri (1), Darrang (8), Nagaon (6), Dibrugarh(1), Sonitpur(2), Karbi Anglong(5), and Cachar (1),and  the highest being in Biswanath (18).

Reportedly, international and inter-state nexus of this illegal poaching have been identified, along with 6 poaching gangs that have been linked with illegal trade in Myanmar. With that, this team which is a collaborative effort between the Assam Police and the Forest department has also foiled 9 attempts at rhino-poaching.

Kaziranga National Park In Assam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the world’s largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros and has long been a target for poachers seeking to profit from illegal trade of rhino horns.
