Under Trial Boy Receives Gold Medal for Excelling in Masters Degree

GUWAHATI: A boy who is under trial for his alleged involvement in terror-related activities has managed to secure the top position of his class in a masters course and accepted his gold medal from the Governor of Assam.

Sanjib Talukdar, a former student leader was arrested for his alleged involvement in a bomb blast in 2019 that left 12 people injured. The chargesheet submitted by the NIA had charged him with conspiracy, unlawful activities and providing support to the main accused of the blast that took place on RG Baruah Road in Guwahati on May 19, 2019.

The 29 years old, youngest among five siblings was the president of the Post Graduate Students' Union of Gauhati University and undergoing his M Phil course in Botany when this incident took place. He was willing to continue his course even from the confines of the jail, but the lack of ample resources for the practicals proved to be a hindrance.

That is why he decided to pursue a course in Sociology which would require comparatively fewer resources. And as the results came out, he managed to achieve the highest of his batch with a score of 71% marks. He received the gold medal from the Governor of Assam, Jagdish Mukhi in the convocation event held in Guwahati on Thursday.

Sanjib Talukdar also completed a Certificate in HIV and Family Education (CAFE) and a Certificate in Human Rights (CHR) course from the Indira Gandhi National Open University. He has also undertaken a Post Graduate Certificate in Geoinformatics from KKHSOU for which the final results haven't been declared yet.

He was allowed for a brief parole for his sister's wedding and the bail application is due for hearing in the Gauhati High Court. Family members mentioned that they are hopeful that the application for bail will be accepted by the court and allow him to pursue his education.
