GUWAHATI: In a big step for Assam and the Northeast, the Union Budget 2025-26 has announced the setting up of a new urea plant in Namrup. This plant will produce 12.7 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of urea every year, giving a major boost to local farmers who rely on fertilizers for their crops.

Along with this, three dormant fertilizer plants in the region will be reopened, which will increase local fertilizer production and reduce the need to import from other places. This will make fertilizers more easily available to farmers in Assam and neighboring states, helping them grow better crops.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also shared the news about the new urea plant in Namrup on X (formerly Twitter). He stated, "What a historic day for Assam ! #UnionBudget2025 has announced a 12.7 lakh MT urea plant in Namrup, a long standing demand of the people of Assam. After the semiconductor plant in Jagiroad , this urea facility will be a game changer for the entire North East. It will not only help us achieve self sufficiency in fertilizer availability but also better channelise our natural gas resources. On behalf of the people of Assam my heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji and Hon’ble Finance Minister Smt @nsitharaman Ji."

The Union Budget 2025-26 has also announced the establishment of Cancer Day-Care Centres in all district hospitals over the next three years.
