GUWAHATI: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has expressed profound sorrow and deep condolences over the demise of the legendary Assamese filmmaker Samarendra Narayan Dev, who passed away today while undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). His death marks the end of an era in Assamese cinema, leaving a void in the cultural landscape of Assam.

In a heartfelt message, Sonowal reflected on the lasting legacy left behind by Dev, saying, “Samarendra Narayan Dev gifted us some of the most cherished Assamese films, including the iconic Aranya (1971). Even today, the songs, dialogues, and powerful narrative of the film remain vivid in our hearts. It likely inspired many of us to work towards preventing rhino poaching and safeguarding the environment.”

He went on to acknowledge Dev’s vast contributions to Assamese cinema, highlighting his remarkable storytelling in several key films. “His works, including Aranya, Putala Ghar, Sonar Horin, Kazirongar Kahini, and Raja, showcased his exceptional storytelling and direction, leaving an indelible mark on Assamese cinema. The news of his demise is deeply saddening.”

Sonowal also expressed that Dev’s loss is felt deeply by the entire cultural community of Assam, stating, “His passing is an irreparable loss to the cultural fabric of Assam, creating a void that cannot be filled. I pray for eternal peace for his departed soul and extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Om Shanti.”

His work is celebrated for its profound storytelling, social relevance, and love for nature, particularly in championing the conservation of Assam’s unique wildlife.
