DIBRUGARH: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday visited Dibrugarh and took stock of the devastating fire, which burnt down many shops in New market area of Dibrugarh town.

"Visited site of the recent devastating fire at New Market in Dibrugarh. Interacted with the locals, shopkeepers & businessmen and took stock of loss of property and damages incurred. I request CM Sarma to extend all possible support to the victims of the incidents," Sonowal tweeted.

At least 17 shops and five residential buildings were engulfed in a devasting fire that broke out in New market area of Dibrugarh on early Wednesday.

Altogether 19 fire tenders from the local fire and emergency services, Oil India Limited (OIL), Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) and Indian Air Force, Chabua battled for nearly 5 hours to bring the blaze under control.

Talking to media persons, Sarbananda Sonowal said, "It was a very unfortunate incident. I will appeal CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to provide compensation to the people, who have lost their property." Sonowal interacted with the people and assured them of all possible help. He also said that he will talk to the Centre for help.
