KOKRAJHAR: A delegation of the Ganatantrik Nagarik Suraksha Mancha (GNSM) led by its president Jarimin Narzary and accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP, Biswajit Daimary and leaders of United Bodo People’s Organization (UBPO) on Wednesday called on the Union Water Resources Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat at Parliament Bhavan and discussed the prevailing situation of the State due to flood and erosion which had claimed lives of 76 people, besides damaging properties of people.

Talking to this correspondent, the president of the GNSM, Jarimin Narzary said that flood and erosion was one of the greatest problems of the State and the region. Narzary, who himself hails from Sanjari Nwgwr of Dhemaji district, said every year the people of Assam had to face the fury of flood and erosion but no proper long-term measure with scientific approach had been taken to end the flood woes. He also said that mere distribution of ration, food stuff and other aid to flood-affected by the government was not a matter of credit for the government and there should be a challenging approach to end the flood and erosion problem of the State.

Narzary said a delegation of GNSM had called on the Union Water Resources Minister and raised the present scenario of the State. He said the Union Minister had assured them to take appropriate measures to tackle the flood and erosion problem of Assam with immediate effect. He said the minister assured to carry out study on Brahmaputra River with technical experts and to dredge the river bed as soon as possible, besides adopting scientific measure with long-term policy to control the flood and erosion.

Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary who accompanied the delegation, also put pressure on the Union Water Resources Minister to take proactive measure to bail out the people from the perennial flood and erosion problem. The delegation also submitted a memorandum to the Union Water Resources Minister, urging him to take initiatives to control the flood and erosion.
